Spain traded around 20¢ entering the quarterfinals — second behind France at ~22¢. Every defensive metric available at the time put Spain first: fewest goals conceded among the eight remaining teams, the best possession-adjusted shot suppression, and the friendliest bracket path. That contract resolved YES at $1.00, a 5x return for anyone holding from the quarterfinal stage.

Spain also took the Golden Ball, the Golden Glove with seven clean sheets, and the Best Young Player award — the awards sweep the team-level numbers had been pointing at all tournament. It is Spain's second World Cup title after 2010.

Spain was the second favorite with the best defensive record and the easiest path. That combination is the closest thing to a repeatable edge in tournament outright markets.

What the Spain trade teaches

Outright favorites are priced off attacking reputation; tournaments are won by defences and by bracket geometry. When the second favorite has both a better defensive record and a softer path than the favorite, the spread between them is usually too wide. That is the single most transferable lesson from 2026, and it applies directly to Champions League and league-title contracts now.
