The short answer

A World Cup portfolio is several small positions of different types, not one large position on one team. Mix winner, stage, match and player contracts, keep long-dated futures small because your money is tied up until they settle or you sell, and avoid holdings that knock each other out. Set a total budget before the first match.

Where things stand

  • Next tournament: the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil, June 24 to July 25, 2027, with 32 teams and 64 matches.
  • Long-dated markets open now: Kalshi lists a 2027 Women's World Cup champion market, a 2028 European Championship champion market and a 2030 World Cup champion market.
  • Fees: ProphetX takes 2% of net gains per market on straight trades. Kalshi charges a transaction fee based on expected earnings. Polymarket US has charged a price-based taker fee since October 2026.

I have funded and traded on all of the exchanges named here. What follows is general education, not financial advice. An event contract can lose 100% of what you paid for it. New to the format? Start with how event contracts work.

Why treat each contract type as its own position?

A winner contract, a "team reaches the quarter-finals" contract and a top-scorer contract are three different positions, even when they are about the same team or player.

  • Winner (outright): settles once, at the final, on the hardest question.
  • Group or knockout stage: settles earlier, on a narrower question.
  • Single match: settles the same day. The Kalshi soccer match markets we checked settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time, without extra time or penalties, so read the rules for knockout games.
  • Player awards (Golden Boot): depend on one player staying fit and getting minutes. That is a different risk from team results.

Sizing all of them the same ignores how differently they settle.

How should lock-up time change your position size?

Every contract ties up the money you paid until it settles or until you sell.

  • A match contract frees your money the same day.
  • A winner contract bought just before a tournament ties money up for about a month. The 2027 Women's World Cup runs for 32 days.
  • A 2030 World Cup winner contract bought today ties money up until 2030.

A simple rule: the longer the lock-up, the smaller the position. Long-dated markets can also be thin, so you may not be able to sell at a fair price before settlement.

Is holding several teams real diversification?

Only partly. Winner contracts on three teams feel diversified, but only one team can win, and teams in the same half of the bracket knock each other out. Before you add a position, ask two questions:

  • Can this outcome and one I already hold both happen? If not, they compete.
  • Does one depend on the other, like a player's Golden Boot and his team going deep? Then they are linked, not independent.

Each position can also carry its own trading fee, including the ones that cancel each other out.

What should you write down for each position?

One line per contract: what has to happen, by when, and what would make you sell. A portfolio of positions you can each explain in one sentence is easier to manage than a list of teams you like.

How do fees change the math?

Each exchange charges differently, and small positions feel fees most.

  • ProphetX: ProphetX charges a 2% trading fee on net gains per market on straight trades (fee page version 1.3, October 12, 2026). Parlays follow a separate fee schedule.
  • Kalshi: Kalshi charges a transaction fee based on the expected earnings of the contract. Some Kalshi markets also charge a maker fee on resting orders, taken only when the order is filled. The order ticket shows the fee before you confirm.
  • Polymarket US: Since October 2026 Polymarket US charges a taker fee on orders that fill straight away, worked out from the price: on standard markets it is highest for contracts near 50 cents (about $1.74 per 100 contracts) and falls toward 1 cent and 99 cents. Orders that rest on the book pay no fee; rebates on them are limited to very high-volume traders from October 19, 2026.

Our Kalshi vs Polymarket comparison goes deeper on costs.

How do you set a budget?

Decide the total you are willing to lose before the first match, split it across positions, and do not top it up after a bad day. Example: with a $100 budget you might put $10 into one long-dated winner contract and keep the rest for stage and match contracts during the tournament. That is an illustration, not a recommendation. If trading stops being fun, use the exchange's limits or self-exclusion tools and read our responsible trading page.

Where can you trade tournament contracts?

ProphetX leads our list for football. It is built around sports; it has also certified election contracts with the CFTC (September 2, 2026). Confirm in the app that it lists the tournament market you want. New users: Trade $50, Earn $75! with code WCPREDICTS, valid in 49 states + D.C. (per the partner's offer terms, checked October 5, 2026). Only filled trades that open a position at $0.80 or below count toward the $50. The $75 comes as three $25 installments: the first within 24 hours of qualifying, and the second and third on day 7 and day 14 only if the previous $25 was fully used on new positions at $0.80 or below. Otherwise they are forfeited. Offer terms apply.

Then Kalshi: Trade $25 and Get $25! with code WCPREDICTS, valid in 47 states + D.C. Then Polymarket US: Deposit $10 get a $25 Trading Bonus! with code WCPREDICTS, valid in 49 states + D.C. Offer terms apply. The state counts are each partner's own, checked October 14, 2026.

ProphetX's minimum age is 18, or the local age of majority if higher. Kalshi's and Polymarket US's is 18. We recommend 21+. The next tournament to plan for is the Women's World Cup 2027.

Can you trade these contracts in your state?

It depends on the state and the platform. As of October 13, 2026, Kalshi's sports contracts are blocked by court order in three states: Nevada, Michigan and Washington. Elsewhere the law is unsettled. Federal appeals courts have split on sports event contracts: the Third Circuit sided with Kalshi on April 6, 2026, and the Ninth Circuit (August 28, 2026) and the Sixth Circuit (September 25, 2026) sided with the states. Kalshi asked the full Sixth Circuit to rehear the case on October 9, 2026; the court has not ruled. Three Supreme Court petitions (Nos. 26-299, 26-338 and 26-344) are pending and none has been granted. Where a platform still takes customers in a state with an open case, we call the status Available — dispute pending. The sign-up screen is the final word for your state.

Frequently asked questions

Should I size a winner contract the same as a match contract?

Usually not. A winner contract ties your money up for the whole tournament, or for years in the case of 2030, so it is normally a smaller share of your budget than a contract that settles the same day.

Is holding three teams to win real diversification?

Only partly. Only one team can win, and teams that can meet in the knockout rounds eliminate each other, so the positions compete as much as they spread risk.

Can I sell a World Cup contract before it settles?

You can sell if another trader will buy at your price. Thin, long-dated markets can make that slow or costly.

Can I lose more than I put in?

When you buy a contract, the most you can lose is what you paid for it, including fees. The contract can fall to zero.

Which World Cup markets are open now?

On October 13, 2026 Kalshi listed champion markets for the 2027 Women's World Cup, the 2028 European Championship and the 2030 World Cup. Listings change, so check the app.
