What the Group E markets taught us

Group E was indeed the second-cleanest favorite group on the board pre-tournament, with Germany clearing 60¢ in most pricing windows to win the group. The 'Ecuador young-squad discount' noted in our pre-tournament analysis proved prescient, as La Tri's reach-Round-of-32 contract traded light, and they ultimately failed to advance. Their group stage exit highlighted the unpredictable nature of World Cup football, despite a Premier League-heavy spine.

The match that defined Group E

The early test, Germany vs Ecuador in Matchday 1, ended up being a crucial fixture. A German victory would have solidified their favorite status, but the outcome shifted the group dynamics considerably. Curaçao's outright contract remained below 1¢ throughout, a reflection of their underdog status.

How far did Group E teams go in the knockout stages?

Germany's journey was cut short in the Round of 32, losing to Paraguay after a penalty shootout. This was a significant upset given their pre-tournament favoritism. Côte d'Ivoire, after advancing as a third-placed team, also faced an early exit in the Round of 32, falling 2–1 to Norway. The expanded 48-team bracket did indeed offer a lifeline to some third-placed teams, but for Côte d'Ivoire, it was not enough to propel them further.

The 'consensus favorite' Germany exited in the Round of 32, demonstrating the unpredictability even in seemingly clear-cut groups.
