The short answer

A classic private bracket pool locks your picks at the start for a fixed entry fee and pays a share of the pot at the end. A prediction market lets you buy and sell each outcome at a live price, before and during the tournament, and exit early if someone will buy. Same question, very different tool.

How does each one work?

Both a bracket pool and a winner contract ask "who wins?". A bracket pool is a closed game among friends or coworkers: everyone pays the same entry, picks every match up front, and a points system decides who takes the pot. Free online bracket games exist too, and their rules differ. This page compares the classic paid pool.

A prediction market contract is a position on one outcome, traded on an exchange such as ProphetX, Kalshi or Polymarket US. It pays $1 if the outcome happens and $0 if it does not, and its price, between 1 and 99 cents, moves as traders react to news. Our guide to how event contracts work covers the basics, and you can see how the 2026 bracket played out.

What are the differences that matter?

Bracket poolPrediction market
CostOne fixed entry feeThe price of each contract you buy, plus fees
PicksLocked before the first matchBuy or sell at any time while the market is open
PayoutA share of the pot, set by how others picked$1 per winning contract, whoever else traded
ExitNoneSell early, if another trader will buy
Most you can loseYour entry feeWhat you paid for your contracts
  1. You can exit early. Pool picks are locked. A market position can be sold before it settles, if someone will buy it. If your team looks weaker after the group stage, you can sell at the current price.
  2. The price carries information. Example: a contract at 20 cents means traders put that outcome at about 20%. A pool leaderboard only tells you who has picked well so far.
  3. Payouts work differently. In a pool, winners split what everyone paid in. On an exchange, each contract pays a fixed $1 if it settles Yes. Your most possible profit per contract is $1 minus the price you paid, minus fees.
  4. What you can lose. In a pool, your entry fee. On an exchange, whatever you put into positions, which can fall to zero. An exchange makes it easy to keep adding money, so set a budget.

Who is on the other side?

In a pool, the other entrants. On an exchange, other traders: the exchange matches buyers and sellers and charges a fee. Example: when you buy Yes at 30 cents, the trader on the other side is either selling a Yes contract they already hold or taking the No side at 70 cents.

Which one should you use?

  • Want a social game with friends and a fixed cost? A bracket pool is simpler, and the fun is the point.
  • Want to act on one specific view and change your mind as news arrives? That is what an event contract does.

Plenty of fans do both: a pool with friends, plus a few small contracts on the outcomes they feel strongest about. Neither is a way to make reliable money.

Which tournaments come next?

The next one is the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil: 32 teams, 64 matches, with the opening match and the final at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro. After that come the 2028 European Championship and the 2030 World Cup. Kalshi lists a champion market for all three, so a market position is possible years before a bracket can be filled in.

Where can you trade tournament contracts?

ProphetX leads our list for football. It is built around sports; it has also certified election contracts with the CFTC (September 2, 2026). (per the partner's offer terms, checked October 5, 2026). Only filled trades that open a position at $0.80 or below count toward the $50. The $75 comes as three $25 installments: the first within 24 hours of qualifying, and the second and third on day 7 and day 14 only if the previous $25 was fully used on new positions at $0.80 or below. Otherwise they are forfeited. Offer terms apply.

ProphetX's minimum age is 18, or the local age of majority if higher. Kalshi's and Polymarket US's is 18. We recommend 21+. I have funded and traded on all three.

Can you trade these contracts in your state?

It depends on the state and the platform. As of October 13, 2026, Kalshi's sports contracts are blocked by court order in three states: Nevada, Michigan and Washington. Elsewhere the law is unsettled. Federal appeals courts have split on sports event contracts: the Third Circuit sided with Kalshi on April 6, 2026, and the Ninth Circuit (August 28, 2026) and the Sixth Circuit (September 25, 2026) sided with the states. Kalshi asked the full Sixth Circuit to rehear the case on October 9, 2026; the court has not ruled. Three Supreme Court petitions (Nos. 26-299, 26-338 and 26-344) are pending and none has been granted. Where a platform still takes customers in a state with an open case, we call the status Available — dispute pending. The sign-up screen is the final word for your state.

Frequently asked questions

Is a prediction market just a fancier bracket pool?

No. A classic paid pool is a closed game with locked picks and a shared pot. A prediction market contract is a position on one outcome that you can buy or sell at a live price until it settles.

Can I lose more than I put in on either?

In a pool you risk the entry fee. When you buy contracts on an exchange you risk what you paid for them, including fees, and they can fall to zero.

Can I sell a World Cup contract halfway through the tournament?

You can sell at the current price as long as another trader will buy it. Thin markets can make that costly.

Is my payout on an exchange affected by how many people trade?

No. Each winning contract pays $1. How many people trade affects the price you can buy or sell at, not the $1 payout.

Which tournament is next for bracket pools and markets?

The 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil, from June 24 to July 25, 2027, with 32 teams. The 2028 European Championship and the 2030 World Cup follow.
